Trucking Industry Threatens to “Shutdown" For The First Week of April
April 02, 2008
The trucking industry has called for a shutdown of all trucks for the full first week of April, in hopes of drawing government attention to the issues currently driving profitability from the industry, primarily the prolonged soaring cost of diesel fuel. Although the total number of truckers involved in this shutdown is unknown, the majority of drivers involved are believed to be independent contractors looking for a solution from the government to provide immediate relief to this crisis.
We are experiencing tighter market capacity coupled with a slight decrease of day trade availability. Static, Contract, Intermodal or LTL carriers are currently not affected. Quebecor World Logistics will continue to monitor the situation closely, and inform you of further news regarding this issue. We will work diligently to leverage our relationships with over 9,000 carriers in attempts to assure the on-time delivery of your product during this time.
The overall impact of this shutdown, assuming the event is fully carried out, will not be known for some time; however, it is expected to have an evident impact considering the already destitute condition of the industry. There are varying reports regarding the time frame of this shutdown. Some industry voices are calling for the shutdown to persist until the problem is fixed, while others believe that even a single day of strike may have a potential effect on the economy.
