Delays Expected; Truckers Strike
May 7, 2008
Many independent truckers have initiated a strike in Northern California, lining their trucks bumper to bumper outside of Union Pacific’s rail terminal, aggressively protesting all transactions at the terminal and slowing all progress to a crawl in response to the lack of support for elevated diesel prices. Union Pacific has placed an embargo on all Intermodal loads heading to Oakland and Lathrop, CA Intermodal facilities in order to protect these shipments from potential delays. The embargos are currently affecting Union Pacific’s Pacer Stacktrain and 40’ containers moving through steamship lines.
Shipments already in transit to the Oakland and Lathrop facilities will be accepted; however, because of the lack of available truck drivers and the reported violence from striking drivers against truckers still willing to work, delays for these shipments are expected but a definitive timeline for these delays is not available.
Customer shipments destined for the Oakland and Lathrop rail yards that were sent prior to the embargo may be affected by the lack of available drivers at these yards. Quebecor World Logistics is doing everything possible to assure that all shipments departing after the embargo will be routed around the affected areas.
Quebecor World Logistics will continue to closely monitor this situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
